So...what is on Margie's mind this week? Fad diets. What is a fad diet? Does the cabbage soup diet, grapefruit diet, Atkins, South Beach Diet (and there are so many more) ring a bell? Each of these 'meal plans' temporarily alters you in such a strict capacity that it is difficult to stay the course . . . and, really, if you have trouble making healthy food choices, why do you think you can stay on track with a fad diet? Is it because you can lose 15 pounds in two weeks? Did you GAIN the 15 pounds in two weeks? No . . . so the chances of keeping that weight off are slim to none. And what happens when you get back to reality? You pack on the pounds because you have deprived your body of what it needs naturally.
We all get off track from time to time with many things, and eating is one of the first (and most important) things to go because we convince ourselves we don't have time. Yet . . . somehow . . . we find the time to prepare an all protein diet, or shop strictly for a phase of the South Beach Diet. There is nothing more effective than incorporating a fat, a protein, and a good carb in your meal while you exercise portion control. It's really that simple!
If you feel like you struggle, struggle, struggle with how to eat and what to eat, there is one 'program' that I feel comfortable recommending. Using Weight Watchers, and the tools they provide, will help you figure out how to balance food. They have a comprehensive website and can offer guidance regarding meal plans and healthy recipes when you need it. It is a service you have to pay for, however, it's worth it. In the February issue of my newsletter, I will offer a couple of free calorie tracking options if you feel like you need that structure to keep you afloat.
Remember to stay away from processed foods and canned vegetables. If you frequently find your meals in a drive-thru, then STOP! Choose frozen vegetables - the veggie steam bags are a great option if you're short on time. Also, if you have switched or are thinking about switching to diet soda, don't do it! If you want to know why, tune in to the February newsletter, which will be out mid-month.
Don't get the newsletter? Email me and I will be sure to put you on the list . . . and don't forget to pass it on to someone you think may benefit from reading it.
As always, have a great week...;))
